         The higher education in Drobeta-Turnu Severin first began in the academic year 1991-1992 as a University College by the Order of the Education Minister no.5601/8.05.1991.

        

         In 2000 took birth the Faculty of Engineering and Management of the Technological Systems from Drobeta-Turnu Severin by the Government Order no.696/2000, having 2 long term specialisations:

-         Engineering and Management of the Production Systems;

-         Harbor Equipments and Installations

 

Also, there were taken 3 short term specialisations from the structure of the University College:

-         Materials and Defectoscopy;

-         Navigation, Inland and Maritime Transport;

-         Naval electromechanics.

 

Since the academic year 2004-2005, there were autorized by the C.N.E.E.A. 2 more long term specialisations:

-         Engineering and Environmental Protection in Industry;

-         Welding Equipment and Technology.

 

By the modifications from the higher education system adopted in order to be aligned to the Bologna Convention, beginning with the academic year 2005-2006, in the faculty structure are comprised 6 license fields with 7 corresponding specialisations:

      In accordance to the Government Decision no.966/October 1st 2011 and the Decision of the Senate of the University of Craiova from July 14th 2011 regarding the structural organisation on departments, the Faculty of Engineering and Management of the Technological Systems had become the IMST Department of the Faculty of Mechanics.
